So what's the big deal about nuclear weapons along a common border?
I have to run out, and will focus on the above issue. The brief answer - because any conflict with Ukraine would involve most of the Western world. Had Ukraine been a nato member, we all may have been dead by now. Also, Ukraine is a very conflicted country. It’s profoundly and totally corrupt. It doesn’t stick to agreements (see Minsk). Instead of negotiating a degree of independence with the Donbas region, they were fixing to destroy them. 8 years of warfare - and on the verge of an escalation. Not all, but the Nationalistic Ukrainians have an incredibly long memory. The grievances against Stalin - or against the Russian Empire - they perceive almost as if they were current.

And so forth. Last but not least - the US presented an ultimatum to Khrushchev because the US are a great nation. It decided it was unacceptable that an enemy would park nuclear weapons a few dozen miles from their border. One reason why Russia is at war with Ukraine is because they are a great nation. How do I know? They have a history of being one - and they have more and (reportedly) better nukes than any other nation. They refuse to have a long border with a hostile nation - especially, if it’s backed by a hostile huge block of nations.

Do I like any of this? No, I hate it. All this crap is a great threat.
