Question and Answer from the xDSL thread. Some interesting info on Germany and Japan.

Q - With ADSL and ADSL Lite it is possible to use analog devices
like telephone, fax or analog modems on the same line. Is there any
development or possibility to use ISDN equipment on the same line? In Germany for examples quite a big number of subscribers have ISDN equipment that can use the benefits of ISDN and couldn't work on a POTS connection. If there is no solution, they would need an extra copper pair for the ADSL connection.

A - Yes, it is possible.
It is an amusing paradox: in the USA ISDN is a synonym for failure; in
Germany the big worry is how to change ADSL to adapt to the successes of ISDN ;)
ETSI TM6 have discussed this a lot, and have proposed a relatively
simple variation of T1.413. A draft proposal is going to the ITU in
Geneva for this week's meeting ("Annex 2" to G.dmt).
Technically, you shift the frequencies and use higher bins - the
suggestion is to start at 170kHz to give space for ISDN (2B1Q requires
120kHz) and a guard band. This does reduce range (you have given up the 'best' copper) but - fortunately- the countries most worried about ADSL over ISDN are those with shorter loops (the situation is very different in Germany than US West's territory for example !)

This change can be achieved with some existing ADSL chipsets.

In Japan there is a different form of ISDN. Different changes are
required, but modification to G.dmt/T1.413 and ADSL can cope with that
too.
