For folks who live off of Social Security alone or who get food assistance, the once a year COLA bumps don't help them during a year like this when their purchasing power is eroding fast.

Furthermore, the closer you are to poverty, the higher the CPI is for you, as things like fuel, transportation, food, and shelter consume a much larger percentage of your income.

These folks are like the canary in the coal mine.

I wonder if the folks who have stopped buying cigarettes have either gone to a patch or have moved to more inexpensive vaping. It's another type of substitution.
