Eh... It does have merit.

VHS isn't the best but is good enough for millions of people and its cheaper than Beta.

Amps, GSM, and CDMA are good enough for the basic phone call.

WCDMA may end up being overpriced overkill until the appliances that live up to their marketing claims reaches the $500 range.

Since market volume is necessary to justify the $$$ for infastructure and licenses, I wonder what coverage WCDMA will have in 2001.
