They are simply coping the calculations from 1980, the products that were in the calculations in 1980.

I think a lot of that is overstated though. True, adding a calculator and internet to a phone increased it's value but extra processing power so it has prettier colors or animations isn't really adding value in a way to ignore the price increase over the old one.
I agree it's a challenge since no two people would probably agree on what adds useful value and what doesn't.
I feel the same about most hedonic adjustments. Airbags, 800 horsepower, alloy wheels, leather seats, 10 speaker sound system etc are all nice to have but they don't change the usefulness of driving from point A to B where the speed limit is limited. A cake is a cake regardless of what icing or sprinkles are on it.
Wow, I was busy all day and apparently missed a slaughter of the market. Anyone call an ambulance? I guess the "watch the sky" indicator is still working.
