The UK is a bit different because it hasn't been directly connected to the mainland for thousands of years. So it was more difficult for outsiders to meddle with the borders. But much of Europe has seen shifting borders until the end of WWII. The breakup of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia added several, but it has been considered bad form to gobble up your neighbors. Especially by force of arms. Even if they once were considered part of your country. Because the reality is that there has been a lot of border churn in Europe. Not to mention, languages are not nicely partitioned by clean borders. Not to mention, Hitler sort of ruined the idea of uniting and protecting all the people speaking the same language.
