Yes, the HP paper does seem to indicate that Zip heads don't make contact with the media, but the variety of sources are all very vague. Even the Patent says that they may or may not make contact.

I'd rather hear from someone at Iomega who knows for sure.

It could be that Iomega's Zip technology is unique enough that Iomega doesn't want to broadcast exactly how it works.
