I don't know if travelers checks still exist, but once upon a time they were a option, especially if you were concerned about theft.

My favorite exchange method is the friendly locals. Not only you get the best rates, you also get to meet some interesting people.

We bought a villa on the Mediterranean that way. There was a merchant that imports from the US. He gave us the local currency at the official exchange rate there and got USD here. It was a win-win for both of us. I've managed to do similar (though smaller) transactions in Thailand, India, Malaysia, etc. And no, there was zero chance of money laundry. It was all legal.
