It's a double edged sword. As I've said here before, I think a lot of politicians are sincere in thinking they will change things in regards to the military and world politics but it is due to naivity. Once they get in and receive their intelligence briefings and realize what's really going on, they realize the old guy wasn't so bad after all.
Like I said before, when I first joined the military, I thought we were the white knights too. Once I climbed up high enough to get the real world picture, I saw we were doing all the same things as our enemies but we were just better at it and getting away with it.
The world isn't unicorns and rainbows but too many think it is and we can all stand around and sing kumbaya holding hands with the rest of the world. On the other hand, no one trusts each other so many problems exist that could be eliminated if there was mutual trust.
There are two sides to every story and though it isn't PC, often the villains are justified in their actions, though not in their entirety. Hitler had a lot of valid points and reasons to lash out. Putin right now. McVeigh warned us about where we are right now. Assang, Snowden etc. When no one will listen, often bad policies follow.
