And even those crazy fucks, will not embrace racism, sexism or homophobia openly! So there is some progress. I dunno anymore. I'm not so sure that historically the paranoia does not become turned against boogeymen and unites people under the perceived fix of authoritarianism. As I have always felt, at all extremes are people who have in common "the ends justify the means." It's the economy stupid, right? The NIMBYism and tearing down of others who are rising. In my experience people shift based on fears as well as the framing of "them" vs. we. Look at Florida and the reframing of abortion as well as "don't say gay." What Trump hit on went deep into the traditionally Democratic white working class and even captured increasing minority males. The anti vaccine movement has also captured a bunch of folks who would generally benefit the most from wise liberal social programs and infrastructure. They are ready for a Bernie "revolution" but from the conservative or as I prefer, rightwing perspectives of us vs. them. They don't believe in government programs anymore and would rather see others knocked down than the broader community lifted up.
