It so obvious that the government knows what people should pay and that we go through this We're thinking of a number! guessing game rather than just getting a bill. It isn't like they don't know or don't have the data. For twenty or more years there has been no technological barrier for individuals to simply be billed. You're doing something, weird - okay - I get it. But for 90% of those 65+ taxes become a huge burden in addition to the health and mental changes that that group has to go through. It is criminal and not in any way progressive. We are not tax experts - the IRS and SSA are and there are few examples of an annuity being taxed - which is what SS actually looks like to me.
