Regarding your first paragraph. You raise a good point. January would be too early to see any trend in sales. February should be the pivotal month which will determine which direction sales are going. I think, if we see firming or improvement in the price of Apple shares that would mean to me that sales are good. Good would mean better than expected. March should tell us how much better sales are for the 2nd quarter. The price of the stock will be determined how much better than expected the sales are. If sales are what the street expected then you will see a slow weakening of the price.
