Could have been the final hit, I suppose. But, they were good and ready to go out of business. Khrushchev’s anti-Stalin speech in 1956 started it. The “Thaw” of the 1960’s continued - that’s when they started publishing Solzhenitsyn and others like him. It became obvious to all that their political system was a circus - and the ideology was a charade. Gorbachev tried to reform, update and improve the system, but it was too late. It’s already been dead, ready to collapse.

And the Saudis turned up the spigots for Reagan. Russia is a petro-state first and foremost.
