I'd say that ECMO acts like a placenta.

ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The ECMO machine is similar to the heart-lung by-pass machine used in open-heart surgery.

I never kept track, but I prolly only pulled the plug on 1 % of my vent patients.

That patient already had his/her first breath so it does not matter how they are breathing. "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being"
