Chinese President Xi Jinping and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron agreed in a phone call on Tuesday on the urgent need for a ceasefire in Ukraine, according to a statement from the Elysee palace in Paris.

The two leaders underlined their attachment to respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, according to the Elysee. They also discussed the risk of an ensuing food crisis and France’s proposal for a Food and Agriculture Resilience Mission.

Macron also insisted on the importance of rebalancing the relationship between the European Union and China to create greater reciprocity, according to the Elysee.

Macron and Xi agreed to deepen cooperation between their two countries in aerospace and nuclear energy, the Elysee added.
