Sadly, things have gone downhill imho.

One of my applied maths lecturers at college used say to the class, with a big beaming smile, ...

"And there you have it! (at the end of some problem that looked impossible to solve), the question is...well..., with your new found skills are you going to push back the boundaries of science, or will you actually work for a living and just take wads of filthy lucre ?".

I decided the filthy lucre was more my style, but that didn't pan out either -g-

These days, I think the filthy lucre has made some big inroads into academia. And, if you don't tow the official line, you are out. The guy holding the wallet says so.
