Hi Sue, that is such a heartwarming story. I remember being frozen when we got the diagnosis- in my mind he was simple precocious ( they are soooo smart). I only used the diagnosis to help teachers and others to understand he experienced things differently but never as a crutch. No one wants to think something is wrong with their child - my heart goes out to your sister. She’s so lucky you helped her get to the place she can help and support him along. I will tell you that he will find his people in life, and they will bring him along to a place where he is fulfilled and happy. You are so wise in saying we are all on the spectrum to a certain extent! Tristan’s fiancé doesn’t have Asperger’s but her sister is austistic, so she never saw him as different- he was just the only boy she could have those deep intellectual conversations she longed for. I firmly believe there is a person for everyone, and a group of friends for everyone. I know Nic will find his, and you are all so lucky to have him, as he is you. Your children will be all the richer for having him as their cousin. Sending you good vibes, and please let me know how he is doing from time to time!

Best,

Kim

Thank you for sharing Nic's story, Sue. You really made a difference in his life and your sister's. There is still so much we still have to learn about Aspies and the Autistic Spectrum.

My wife works with autistic kids 5-days a week, with most of her time spent with a non-verbal 12-year old kid who functions at the level of a 6-month old. It is exhausting work. However, there are times when she gets small breakthroughs, and that is very rewarding both for her and the kid's family.
