Stephen,

Samsung seemed much more serious about making the Alpha, and Mitsubishi obviously didn't see any money in it.
Samsung will probably fab the first 1GHz Alpha before the Merced loses it's umbilical cord, and that is good for CPQ/DEC.
The Alpha seems to have a mind of it's own and will probably wind up with a future that noone can predict.
I've now read about 10 slants on what CPQ will do with Alpha, from trashing it to challenging Intel with it.
CPQ will, of course, get it's money out of the chip, if nothing else. I do suspect someone will find a way to keep it around for a long time.
