I think you’re right. It took several decades for the USSR to transform from from a brutal imperialistic totalitarian dictatorship - into a political system that stayed afloat simply out of habit and momentum. By the mid-80’s it was a shell, a house of cards, ready to collapse. On many US college campuses you’ll probably find more true believers in marxism-leninism than they had in all of the USSR.

No political system is more corrupting than socialism. The transition wasn’t easy.

The “peace dividend” was a nice thing, but not for everyone. Weapons (and big idea) manufacturers needed business. The new friendship turned sour. I think the real turning point was the bombing of Serbia. It was done against the strongest protests from Russia. This showed them that the West doesn’t give a rats a$$ about their opinions. Expansion of NATO was more of the same.
