The entire bolshevik coup - and the huge civil war that followed, with several invasions by foreign forces, plus the “Red Terror”, the food “appropriations” - and many more things - all were working definitions of cruelty. Russell was somewhat disappointed in Lenin - “too dogmatic”. My guess is - Lenin was busy running his revolution, and wasn’t happy about spending time on the interview, and not interested in making an impression. Also, by 1920 he may have already suffered from headaches due to the neurological disease which killed him by 1924.

In one very old joke (which may have sent many people to the Gulag) some child does something wrong, and Lenin slaps him. People say - “look how kind and humane he is! Only a little slap! I thought he’d slit his throat!”.

Edit - Lenin may have given the child a little talk rather than a slap. Don’t remember the details…. :)
