The stores and products have certainly homogenized since then. But there are sharp attitudinal differences between small towns and urban centers with suburbs. Obama was right when he predicted that small town America would cling to guns and religion as a fierce identity defense while the evil coastal liberal took the country forward into the 21st century. I laugh when I her the phrase "own the libs" because those clowns don't own but a fraction of what I do in material, financial, and experiential terms. Hence this sad effort to drag the world back to the 1950s when those small towns still meant more than where to find the nearest Wal-Mart. It's a sad cultural disintegration out there.
