Many of Indian laws are British era legacies. So it was British Power. Certain laws were different for Muslims and Hindus. For example, Muslim men are allowed multiple wives. (A law used by some Hindus who do not want a divorce from their existing wife and acquire another one; they can convert to Islam and then legalize their family arrangements). It has really not been a big problem .

But politically, there is a new movement towards a Uniform Civil Code.

Indian laws do need to come out of the British era, if there is a new concensus. Unfortunately, the UCC agenda is coming from a radical party.
