I mentioned DSL modems in my original post. I am very aware or them and at one time last year had half my money in DSL stocks. Mainly Amati which was boosted by the Texas Instruments buyout offer while all my other stocks were down.
DSL modems take advantage of the fact that the phone line to your local exchange has a considerably higher bandwith. But as soon as your connection gets routed through a telephone switch and enters the phone backbone network it is bandwith limited to 64 Kbit/s.
