Seems like ADP uses a different classification of Small Business than what is considered the standard, which is companies employing 1-100 employees. That's what the SBA, banks and financial services use. I would be interested to see the breakout done that way and if the 50-100 employee companies showed a decline as well or would it offset or turn small business positive. I think one reason for the decline is its more difficult for small businesses to pay what employees are asking and possibly getting from the larger firms. New candidates are typically asking for 10% to 20% above industry averages now, which is tough on small businesses to meet. Also, mid market and larger may be more amenable to work from home arrangements, which is also a big deal for new candidates, especially now that Biden has gotten gas prices up to $5/gal and apparently is shooting for higher. A lot of small businesses are more hands on and need you on the job.
Also, proving my point, is that this relatively bad news caused the market to soar today. It got bought. Telling.......
