I think the point is that there would be no point in going further. Times change. These days, wealth and power are no longer in land and plunder - it’s in doing business together. Inventiveness + industriousness. This war is an aberration - which should not have happened.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, thinking that Putin is an absolute dictator is a mistake. He is very strong - but if his elites no longer trust him - he would be removed. Russia has a multi-party system - and he has to actually win his elections.
