Back from Lotus conference, today, and was shown project management for Plymouth Rock insurance company application. It is interesting to see how Lotus/IBM use VAR's to do boiler plate application to enter into document management field. Lotus provide the language and VAR's get their customers and set up the completion of a Lotus/domino based application software. It took half a year to finish testing the design in a contract. Lotus is document management for networks and intranet. Domino is the equivalent for web sites. Domino.Merchant is the small business E-commerce software.

Lotus is email and document communications, search, collaborate and knowledge capture. Lotus/IBM has 18% of the overall document management business. VAR's business is boiler plate and most of it of any class of application is the business. You don't buy Lotus, you buy all the VAR's to get into the boiler plate business.

Latest e-suite from Lotus is the suite used in web browser enviroment. This points out how wrong the Justice dept is on Harvard's discovery of Microsoft's browser war. The war is not about the browser. It is the change from Windows 95 and NT to "dos with browser and java does the windows". You need disk operating system with network operating system on the internet together to speed up the use of word processors like e-suite written in Java. Java's build on the fly can use subset instructions to speed up the transactions. If you believe the processor designers are speeding up windows NT on long instructions, you know computer field will go through a revolution yet. Whether people in the computer field realizes or not; whether it is the software that needs the fast processors or whether fast processors needed a fast software. I think SUN may have both fast processor and fast software. Microsoft lost out until this week; they regrouped their browser folks into the dos group. Now Alpha and Merced all have to be redesigned. Cut a few transistors out of 9 million strong. Forget about long instructions.
