Monaco - Re: Compaq, DEC & Alpha

My view is quite simple. A computer company, in this case Compaq/DEC is not going to be successful selling computer chips to OTHER computer manufacturers - pure and simple. Nobody wants to buy the "engine" for their computer if it is made by their strongest competitor.

That leaves only Compaq/DEC to make Alpha computers. Now, DEC has been real focused on ALpha machines for 7 ot 8 years and look where it has got them - sold out to Compaq.

Compaq's history has been 99% x86 based with a brief flirtation with MIPs and some current Windows CE machines (Hitachi based).

Compaq is not going to jump off a new bridge and carry a flag that even DEC couldn't hold up.

As for 64 Bit NT on DEC - well, that should happen.

It will probably be a different 64 Bit NT than will appear for the MERCED. Hence, Compaq/DEC will be offering it's own orphaned version of 64 Bit NT for Alpha.

The part about Compaq challenging IBM with Open VMS made me laugh out loud. That's the best joke I've heard all day.
