The reality is 35-45 year olds have developed amazing skills.
My son-in-law was an English Lit major. After working as a waiter for 10 years, he walked into a small oil company where he was hired for a job doing clerical work. As his expertise developed, he was promoted into managing a group of people, moved about, and now does data and statistical management.

The company basically said, "We want you to develop these skills, you have our training facility at your disposal." Anything he wants or needs, he gets.

A man I knew who managed a large corporate division with 10s of thousands of employees once told me, "I'd rather hire someone I know and train him than to hire someone I don't know but already has the knowledge, when possible." You would think that pearl of wisdom would be gone by now with more technical requirements involved. Apparently, it isn't -- great companies can build great company men from the right framework.
