During the centuries of the Roman Republic it was generally understood and accepted that people pursued careers and positions of prominence because of personal ambitions, hopes for lucrative appointments after having served as high public officials, hoping for their families to gain in prominence and wealth. The citizenry saw nothing wrong with any of that - EXCEPT, the society as a whole also had to benefit from those accomplishments.

They were fine with politicians pursuing personal ambitions - for as long as they also served for the good of their country and its citizens.

Something went wrong with that sense of balance. These days, politicians are self serving SOB’s - and the public exists to be manipulated and lied to.

With some exceptions, they do NOT deserve our respect.

And this appears to be a global phenomenon. We are going through a civilizational depression due to loss of ethics.
