Mohan,
Thank you for the post on China. Its an interesting view (that China is holding the line on devaluation until its safe to run for cover) and is a view I heard expressed in a coffee shop the other day by a fellow that runs a company in Guang Dong. He said that H.K. is the new family jewel and China will layer on protection to its fullest extent to assure no big hitches here in the early stages. China would like to mold Shanghai into a similar position as Hong Kong as well he said. I think China is behaving like stand up citizens frankly. I hope they can hold the line until a better view of recovery is available in S.E.A. Did you read the Stratford Bulletin reporting that Chinese vice premier Li Lanqing was predicting 8% growth in 1998? It is difficult to see how that will be possible in the face of dwindling trade receipts.

IMO it is still a bit of a cliff hanger.

Best,
Stitch
