Off topic================== No, sorry, don't know an awful lot about video tape.... except, keeping them away from magnets and phones. Although i would imagine if stored properly (temperature and humidity) they probably act like a fine bottle of cabernet........ it gets better and certainly more entertaining with age! RichieH

OT--Video tape life. I'm playing tapes from the early 80's with unobservable quality reduction. I don't think anybody has a very clear idea on the true limits. A lot longer than most numbers that get batted around, I bet. Not playing them probably only helps marginally magnetically, but physically every time they go through the machine they are subject to the machine's appetite and illnesses. Of course, the machine may go magnetically berserk too ... . Afficionados recommend storing tapes not rewound, on the theory that rewinding pulls the tape tighter and can stretch whereas storing unrewound leaves them in a state of low stress. If your tapes are really precious to you, you might consider that. Mine are junk, just favorite junk <ggg>. It shouldn't be more than a year or two before DVD recording is cheap and realiable. Hold out and watch. Also, you need a lot more speed than you can get now, or you'll spend several hours per hour recorded (at least that's my experience with audio on CD-R).
