Tuesday February 10, 9:01 am Eastern Time: Quantum and ATTO Technology Forge Strategic Ultra2 SCSI Storage Alliance: Release the Ultra2 Solution. Partnership Provides First Complete, Cost-Effective Storage Solution for Maximizing Digital Video Performance
Company Press Release MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1998-- Quantum Corporation (NMS:QNTM), a leading global manufacturer of hard disk drives for high-capacity storage applications, and ATTO Technology Inc., a premier supplier of high-performance SCSI host adapters, today announced the formation of a strategic storage alliance.
Quantum and ATTO are teaming to deliver compatible storage products that feature the leading-edge Ultra2 SCSI LVD (Low Voltage Differential) interface, and are aimed specifically at the exploding digital video, 3D, and content creation marketplace.
The Quantum/ATTO alliance represents a unique vendor partnership in the storage industry. The program consists of ongoing engineering collaboration to ensure compatibility between Quantum hard drives and ATTO host adapters, as well as co-marketing efforts including road shows, co-op advertising, and development of instructional literature.
The first initiative of the alliance is the development of ''The Ultra2 Solution,'' representing the first complete Ultra2 SCSI LVD drive/adapter tandem available to the market. The Ultra2 Solution joins the Quantum Atlas(TM) III and Quantum Viking(TM) II hard drives with ATTO's ExpressPCI Ultra2/WIDE SCSI host adapter.
It combines the industry-leading capacities, performance, and reliability of Quantum drives with ATTO's Advanced Data Streaming (ADS(TM)) technology, a feature set that optimizes the performance of Ultra2 SCSI LVD-based systems and provides transfer rates of up to 80 Mbytes/sec.
The Ultra2 Solution incorporates the high 18.2GB and 9.1GB capacities of the Quantum Atlas III and Quantum Viking II drives -- the first to feature the Ultra2 SCSI LVD interface. These capabilities complement the performance of ATTO ExpressPCI host adapters, which are 32-bit devices specifically designed to optimize I/O performance in media-rich applications. ATTO ExpressPCI host adapters have recently been selected for integration in the popular Macintosh G3 systems.
Solutions for Digital Video Available Today
With the availability of The Ultra2 Solution, the digital video and content creation marketplace now has a complete, high performance, yet affordable alternative to more costly technologies for meeting the demanding throughput requirements of massive video and image files.
''Now, the increasing numbers of VARs, system integrators, and OEMs that serve the digital video market can look to Quantum and ATTO today for compatible, maximum-throughput SCSI solutions that let users access and transfer their video or image files faster and easier than ever before,'' said Tim Fondiller, vice president of marketing for Quantum's Workstation and Systems Storage Group.
''They don't have to rely solely on expensive new technologies to achieve blazing data delivery performance. With The Ultra2 Solution, they can obtain the needed speeds without having to invest in whole new storage infrastructures or throw out millions of lines of code. And they can feel secure that they are investing in compatible, synergistic storage products supported by two of the most reliable names in the industry.''
Fondiller added that Quantum/ATTO integrators and end users also will benefit from plug-and-play Ultra2 SCSI compatibility with a variety of PC, Macintosh, and Digital Alpha platforms for swiftly expanding high-end storage applications.
''The Ultra2 Solution program was designed to provide one-stop, cost-effective storage solutions that today's resellers, integrators, and users need to stay competitive,'' said Timothy Klein, president and CEO of ATTO Technology. ''ATTO and Quantum are aligning our expertise to make it easy and affordable for digital video and content users to benefit from the tremendous performance advantages offered by Ultra2 SCSI technology today.''
New, advanced Ultra2 SCSI LVD technology is part of the high-end SCSI-3 specification. In addition to data throughput rates of up to 80 Mbytes/sec, the benefits of Ultra2 SCSI LVD include extended cabling lengths to 12 meters, cleaner signaling, backward compatibility with SCSI devices, and upper byte termination, which enables the combining of narrow and wide SCSI devices on the same SCSI bus.
