I noticed that I had not responded to your message. On software packages, you can buy rather inexpensively Window On Wall Street Deluxe or Personal Investor or the comparable program from Omega Research. They're all available at Comp USA and Best Buy.

On books, I like Martin Pring's books, "Technical Analysis Explained", and "Martin Pring on Market Momentum". I've learned more by just trying different stuff and looking for patterns and correlations on the Window and Wall Street software than reading books. The manuals that come with the various software go through and explain each of the indicators that come with the software including stochastics. If I were you, I'd just get the software. It wont' cost you more than $50.
