I wouldn't necessarily assume that the world would be the same, or even as close as possible (although the idea isn't unreasonable). But if "this area wasn't always part of Ukraine" is even remotely considered reasonable justification to seize it, so should "this area wasn't always part of Russia. One standard for both, I'll let you pick.
So did Poland
Poland gained and lost territory. The USSR (which had not been attacked by Poland) grabbed some Polish territory (part of which went to Russia, part to Ukraine, part to Belarus, and part to Lithuania as sub-national entities at the time and as their territory as independent nations later) and "compensated" Poland with German territory.
