I guess the question is: what would Yamamoto have preferred Japan to do? .....The oil embargo placed on Japan was literally strangling its economy - as Japan has no energy resources on its own land.

And while the US in 1945 was an industrial power - it is far less clear that the US of 2022 is still an industrial power without Chinese manufacturing inputs.,

Let me shared a true story ... I was in Shanghai early 90s maybe just after the Tiananmen "massacre"... I was one of very few overseas Chinese doing business with China and my host "minder" helped me moves around different provinces... one of my trips was Chongqing where my dad used to lived during WW2 and Kuomintang wartime capital, my brother born there, he now living in Sydney nearly died from Covid-19... I visited INDEX Machine tool sales a well-known Germany machine's tools company. They had a manufacturing base there, I was interested buying many INDEX machine tool... later went Tsingtao and Hangzhou sourcing raw process chemicals... Calcium Chloride... at one point I asked my minder why China buying so much stuff where I knew China had plenty... i.e. marbles... my minder who is a Manchurian look exactly like a Han Chinese...... said China is very smart they try to buy marble from overseas like Italy rather mining theirs in Liaoning or Xingjiang provinces...

I was stunned what he told me... yes China has almost everything ... minerals, gas, oils, rare earths and even gold...... but tries to conserve what has......
