Goldman Study Says Technology Spending To Rise In '98

A strong 71% of respondents to the survey conducted by Goldman Sachs
and Computer Intelligence expect to increase spending on data networking
by at least 6% to as much as 20% or more in 1998. Fifty-one percent of
technology executives at these large corporations mentioned Cisco Systems
Inc. (CSCO) as their primary network supplier, compared with 17% for
Bay Networks Inc. (BAY) and 13% for 3Com Corp. (COMS).

These buyers also favored asynchronous transfer mode, or ATM, gear for
local area network backbones over gigabit Ethernet, contrary to the
popular notion that gigabit Ethernet is gaining broadly in this market.
However, standards-compliant gigabit Ethernet products are to become
widely available in the second half of the year and that could draw more
interest to the category.

The survey also found that 42% of respondents planned to use Ethernet
ports integrated on computer motherboards rather than as separate
network adapter cards, a negative sign for adapter-card makers such as
3Com.
