Pushkin, Yesenin, Vysotsky, Gagarin,
This is my country!
Ruined churches and new temples,

Mentioned in the first line is Vladimir Vysotsky. He’s very little known in the West - but he’s the individual who
contributed far more than any other human being to the demise of the USSR. A poet, actor and a great songwriter and performer, in his songs he openly revealed the horrors of the Soviet regime. His satire was powerful. His popularity was immense.

Here are a couple of songs with subtitles - the first one is a sad and somewhat humorous one, about how often poets die young.

The other one is about a wolf hunt. A very different, intense song. Wolfs get it with their mother’s milk that the can’t cross barriers marked with red flags. Hunters use this to contain them and kill them. Not this time - this wolf overcomes his fear - and goes free.
