>>>> I thought the war was all about Ukraine wanting to join NATO? Yet, it looks like Russia is just fine with accepting two more NATO countries with far more military power along its border<<

Are you kidding? Observing what is going on in this war, I submit that Ukraine would have won in an armed conflict against Sweden and Finland put together. Or, given enough cannons and ammo - against any 2 European armies (if not more).

Europe has gone woke and soft. Ukraine - not so much (meaning, not at all).

Finland has 5.5 million population. Sweden - about 10.5. Ukraine alone claims close to 40 million. And they’re war hardened and tough.

Many books will be written about this Ukraine - Russian war. It appears that the quality of soldiers is similar. The Russians seem more adaptable - if a tactic doesn’t work, they easily switch to a different one. If a tactic does work - they stick with it and remain disciplined. Just keep repeating the same play - until it stops working. They have more and better weapons. Their officer corp seems better educated. There is also talk that the NATO way of structuring of an armed force is too rigid - and leaves no room for flexibility to the commanders on the ground.

Could be said that part of the problem Ukraine is having is simply having to fight an opponent in a higher weight category. They are forced to mobilize as hard as they can. Russia is still using professional contract soldiers in combat roles.
