I was never aware of it before, but it does look to have happened over a longer time period.

Here is an analysis from the Daily Telegraph (the tory version of "the Guardian") nominally Right Wing.

So it has happened before, looks to be a "grass roots" method of government replacement.... outside of the tptb influence.
