Atmel Opens 8-Inch 0.25-Micron FAB in Rousset, France

ROUSSET, France, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML - news) held
an opening ceremony for its newest 8-inch, 0.25-micron capable wafer fabrication plant, FAB 7, in
Rousset, France, in the presence of Mme Dominique Voynet, French Minister of Regional
Development and Environment.

George Perlegos, Atmel President and CEO commented, ''We foresee future growth in the market
for Atmel's products. The advanced technology of FAB 7, and its 8-inch wafer size, will bring us the
economies of scale in order to compete aggressively in our markets, and grow our market share.
We aim to bring out a number of new, leading-edge products during this year which will make full
use of FAB 7's advanced process capabilities (0.25-micron, CMP, STI).''

CEO of Atmel ES2, Bernard Pruniaux said, ''Through the end of 1997, Atmel has invested over
$300 million to complete FAB 7's first phase, with the creation of 500 new jobs. Over the next
