Jim,

I think the strategy of all of companies that have UNIX servers hinges on Netscape being a viable long-term company. If Netscape is bought or goes under, I think you'll see each UNIX systems company (IBM, Sun, HP, SGI) coming out with its own web server products to compete with MSFT. At least SGI has the source code license and some expertise in that area already ...

Jim, << Netscape >>

The company won't die. It may be bought out, but the basic
Netscape format will live on. I know at TI, it was the choice
browser as I know also for 2 universities. I believe it is preferred
throughout most tech industries and universities.
These are sectors weak in supporting advertising, where revenues
are generated, but are also resistant to structural change.
An example is with TI and Sun designer work stations. To convert
would be an incredible expense in both retraining and reformatting
an already understood data base, not to mention the cost. This is one reason I believe SGI will have difficulty penetrating existing environments. The efficiency of using current systems in place far out-weight any changes in performance unless orders of magnitude are involved. I was part of the workstation evolution that went from 3 units in the mid 80's with a dozen employees to a multitude of workstations and their software / hardware evolution built around 350 designers.
With this, I believe Netscape will survive, even under another
name.

JD, it's superior server products like SGI's new WebFORCE offering that will keep NSCP viable for years to come.

<imho> The worst thing that could happen right now would be for any company to
buy NSCP... with the exception of SUNW given their Java ownership. The best thing would be for the ORCL's, SGI's and SUNW's of the world to hit the bar and buy-in NSCP big.

Noticed your footprints over on the NSCP thread. Where are they at with all this?

Partly. But also note SGI has published record-breaking SPECweb numbers using the Zeus http server ;).
