he greatest invention of the last century The defining discovery of our day just missed the last century. 102 years ago the relationship between electricity and magnetism was discovered. The discovery did not lead to inventions until well inside the last century. Electromagnetic devices are the defining characteristic of this century.

Some people might argue a better "invention" was contraceptives Personally I would rank air conditioning up there. Also, toilet paper. Although TP I think has been around for awhile. Others for some reason say it was sliced bread. Personally I prefer a nice artisan loaf and cut with my own bread knife.

They discovered penicillin just in time to save my brother's life.

The greatest invention of the last century was arguably vaccines.

This can't be called "invention" really, but the discovery of the importance of hand washing and generally speak sanitation were the greatest discoveries. Made in conjunction with the discovery of "germs".
