WHO declares monkeypox a global health emergency as cases surge An emergency committee from the World Health Organization (WHO) has named the monkeypox outbreak, currently spreading in non-endemic countries, a “public health emergency of international concern” with over 16,000 cases found in 75 countries, including five deaths. In a statement WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said "WHO’s assessment is that the risk of #monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region where we assess the risk as high".
