NDS to show HDTV at NAB(or alphabet soup). New 4:2:2 encoders...................................

NDS Prepares to Launch New Products, Technologies and Solutions for the Digital Broadcasting Era at NAB 98
06:01 a.m. Feb 10, 1998 Eastern

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1998--NDS, the leading provider of end-to-end digital broadcasting solutions, today announced that it will show a number of new products and digital broadcasting solutions at NAB in Las Vegas (April 6-9, 1998 - Booth: Sands 2312).

NDS will be building on its 'first to market' pioneering reputation with the launch of new products in areas such as: DTV/DTTV-ATSC/HDTV; MPEG-2 4:2:2 contribution, distribution and DSNG; Digital Conditional Access; Program distribution for small and medium broadcasters, private networks and business TV; and Data Broadcasting.

The NDS booth will highlight a fully working end-to-end digital broadcasting solution for ATSC/HDTV with support for the most prevalent of the HDTV profiles -- 480p, 720p and 1080i.

NDS will show live, real-time transmission through the end-to-end system which incorporates new NDS products such as seamless MPEG Splicing and the company's new 2U encoder range for both 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 transmission, as well as 8VSB modulation, 8PSK modulation for contribution and NDS Reflex(tm) statistical multiplexing.

"With over 20 U.S. stations declaring that they will start broadcasting digitally by November 1998 and many others being mandated to complete their move to digital by the first half of 1999, NAB will play host to a mass of demonstrations and thin promises," said Ian Tapp, vice president marketing development of NDS Americas. "We will be one of the very few to show a working solution for ATSC/HDTV."

NDS will demonstrate its cutting edge MPEG-2 4:2:2 solutions for the contribution and distribution market, along with new products and solutions for 4:2:2 digital satellite news gathering (DSNG). NDS was first to market with MPEG-2 4:2:2 solutions which have already been adopted by major networks such as the European Broadcast Union (EBU).

NDS and major U.S. broadcasters have successfully tested these 4:2:2 solutions across the United States, and they have been purchased by Bell Canada to expand digital programming throughout Canada and to broadcast the 1998 Winter Olympics from Nagano, Japan.

For the program distribution needs of small to medium broadcasters, private networks and business TV, NDS will show NDS Director(tm), which is being quickly adopted by broadcasters and telcos around the world.

Combining compression, multiplexing, modulation, conditional access and subscriber management systems, NDS Director is a total end-to-end solution, contained in a single proven package. It is built on NDS' vast experience of both the technology and the business of pay TV through providing end-to-end digital broadcasting systems to large-scale broadcasters around the world.

"We have become the recognized leader in providing end-to-end digital broadcasting systems to large scale broadcasters around the world," said Ian Tapp, VP of marketing development of NDS Americas. "The major systems we have worked on gives us vast experience of both the technology and the business of pay TV.

"Now this expertise and our end-to-end concept is available to small and medium broadcasters, giving them the performance, flexibility and reliability features of our largest end-to-end systems, at a fraction of the cost, and with fast delivery times."

NDS will show its digital Conditional Access (CA) solution -- VideoGuard(tm) -- for satellite, DTV/DTTV and cable pay TV. NDS's Conditional Access takes broadcasters beyond revenue protection and provides operators with increasingly sophisticated marketing opportunities, such as targeted market segmentation and viewer programming choices including impulse pay-per-view and subscription pay-per-view.

Visitors to the NDS' NAB 98 booth will be able to see the latest developments in Data Broadcasting -- the ultimate push technology -- NDS Data Broadcasting Network (DBN). Using the existing infrastructure of satellite broadcasting, DBN offers numerous benefits for consumers and content providers.

It delivers information more than 1,000 times faster than the Internet and is the quickest and cheapest way for consumers to download multimedia information with video, animation and CD quality sound to their PCs through a low cost board that takes minutes to install. With DBN, broadcasters and publishers can deploy new, revenue-generating business models for delivering value-added services and products.

NDS' booth technology demonstrations will include Interactive TV, and NDS Capture Station. NDS also expects to announce a number of new customers, strategic partnerships and the expansion of its global distributor network at NAB. About NDS
