Hyundai Electronics to Produce Double-Speed DVD-ROM From March

Hyundai Electronics Industries said that it will begin producing next-generation data storage devices, called DVD ROM drives, in volume from March, casting another challenge to the competition between Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics for a larger share in the emerging market for computer devices.

The company recently unveiled a double-speed DVD ROM drive sample which it had developed with technical support from Matsushita Electric of Japan.

The new DVD ROM model is available for every kinds of compact discs from ordinary CD-ROM titles to CD-recordable and CD- rewritables with a speed of up to 3,600 kilobytes a second, a spokesperson for Hyundai Electronics Industries said.

The Korean electronics maker expects the new development will generate 35 billion won (approximately $22 million) in revenues this year.
