THop -

am trying to find that data you refered to.. I went to the TPC homepage and looked at the TPC-D results. The only one I see for SGI is a TPC-D for 100 GB filesystem where an 8 processor Origin got a 799.9. The DG AViiON 32 processor ccNUMA machine received a 3305.8 on the 300 GB database. If you assume the ORIGIN scales perfectly and lets forget that the data is from a 100 GB database not a 300 GB database, that would say that a 32 processor origin would receive about a 3200 tpc-d.....

I'm afraid I didn't explain what I wanted to say very well, as I felt slightly flushed after reading Patrick's response to my original posting.

My point was that two almost completely identical DG AViion systems (on the 100GB db), went from 528.6 using Oracle 8.03 to 1135.7 using Oracle 8.04. Because we're running 8.03, we can obviously expect a similar speedup. That would put the same Origin @ 1718.6 on the 100GB DB. I'll not speculate on the 300GB results, as I don't think it will be long until you'll see some.

Sorry I didn't explain myself well, but I think the numbers will increase for SGI in much the same way that they did for DG when the 8.04 numbers are available. This would seem to indicate that the SGI system is indeed faster.

Also, while the Origins don't scale perfectly, they're pretty close to linear, and not only are better in this regard than any NT system I know of, but don't require a forklift upgrade if you want to do something other than generate TPC numbers ;)

THop:

In addition to points that Justin mentions, the other points to remember are that a). this is the *first* TPC-D submission by SGI so that we obviously have less experience in this that others who've played this benchmarking game before and b). Oracle obviously spends less resources tuning their code on SGI than on other platforms such as SunOS and NT.

As the most recent SPECWeb numbers released by SGI show (cf biz.yahoo.com ) when you put in some effort to tune the application to Origin platform you can get phenomenal results.
