Pat,

Re: "$1.9B in new orders "encouraging."

New orders for AMAT were stated to be $1.29B, thus giving a BTB of ~ .98.

regards,
Teri

AMAT's earnings surprise should at least help buoy the overall tech sector rally for the rest of this week. Capital equipment is prone to more pronounced cyclicality than the rest of the tech sector and is usually considered a 6-9 mo leading indicator by forecasters.

Let's see how many tech fund managers stay in cash after this. e.g., Brandywine has got something like $8 billion in cash!. A few more tech earning surprises like this and we could see panic buying like May-Jun '97. Money flow is the key and tech is the hot sector to which they will be rotating, IMHO.

Ciao,

Daniel.
