Whenever I saw the Crowley family, I hoped the tenant farmers would appear at the door with pitchforks and torches to spirit them all down the lane and into a lake, preferably tarred and feathered first. It was a vivid portrait of my long-held view that inherited privilege is nothing more than a recipe for inbred mediocrity. They richly deserved their eventual economic and social demise. Most peers now in the UK earned their life peerage through actual achievements. The handful of remaining inherited titles is like a dusty museum wing.
