[One note of agreement]

Hip Hip Hurray for USWEST. A Telco that is finally making sense.

I agree and if they later have to add standard DSL because their customers demand it, I'm sure they'll do it.

I also agree on your summation of MSFT and INTC, etc. But, again, if it makes the market move, more power to them.

For my money, I won't back any company that's not thinking long term and developing interoperable systems.

As far as a global scale is concerned, once the data signal gets to the CO, it makes no difference what is at the other end. Remember, this is a point to point circuit, not switched like analog or ISDN. I don't care what kind of signal arrives at my home--it can be a 2B1Q system from PairGain. As long as I finally get the bandwidth I want at a price I am willing to pay, that is all that counts.

I know this is the case and I still maintain telcos will eventually offer one line code and not two or three. Why? Because no one wants to have to worry about which system they buy, the same as VHS versus Beta. For modems to be offered retail, they need to be standard and interoperable because my modem does have to match my telcos.

Yes, USWest is starting with CAP because it's available. When the market heats up and the big players are installing DMT, I suspect they'll switch to the standard. This debate goes way back to when GTE was mumbling about doing CAP first and then DMT. With the Consortium, the argument's only become stronger.

But, hey, time will tell.

All in my opinion.
