Goldman Study Says Technology Spending To Rise In '98

A strong 71% of respondents to the survey conducted by Goldman Sachs
and Computer Intelligence expect to increase spending on data networking
by at least 6% to as much as 20% or more in 1998. Fifty-one percent of
technology executives at these large corporations mentioned Cisco Systems
Inc. (CSCO) as their primary network supplier, compared with 17% for
Bay Networks Inc. (BAY) and 13% for 3Com Corp. (COMS).

These buyers also favored asynchronous transfer mode, or ATM, gear for
local area network backbones over gigabit Ethernet, contrary to the
popular notion that gigabit Ethernet is gaining broadly in this market.
However, standards-compliant gigabit Ethernet products are to become
widely available in the second half of the year and that could draw more
interest to the category.

The survey also found that 42% of respondents planned to use Ethernet
ports integrated on computer motherboards rather than as separate
network adapter cards, a negative sign for adapter-card makers such as
3Com.

EARTHLINK NETWORK INC. (ELNK) 38 5/8 CLOSED. Shares of Internet access provider
are expected to be on the move again this morning as the company has reached an agreement
with Sprint Corp. (FON ) to sell 30% of the company to this major long-distance
telecommunications provider. Already shares of ELNK are quoted on Instinet as high as $43 a
share. According to the press release, Sprint is said to be paying $180 million for this stake in
EarthLink, providing this fast growing access provider with a well heeled partner. This deal
seems to be a major coup for this very aggressive Internet provider as the arrangement will
allow EarthLink to obtain Sprint's Internet Passport customer base, along with branded
marketing and distribution channels, and a five-year commitment from Sprint to provide a
minimum of 150,000 new customers per year and access to Sprint's data network. This latest
move places EarthLink in a better position to compete against behemoth America Online
(AOL 109), just two days after AOL decided to raise prices for its services. This price increase
prompted EarthLink to quickly respond by offering its "Get Out of AOL Free" program which is
intended to attract disgruntle AOL customers now that AOL has decided to hike prices. As
mentioned before, management at ELNK is thinking on their feet and willing to give AOL a run
for their money. While EarthLink is still small potatoes to AOL, their aggressive management
strategies suggest that this company will be around for the long-haul and generate value for its
shareholders. The news that Sprint has decided to buy into EarthLink is just a reflection on how
focus management is in keeping the company moving forward with alliances that can have an
immediate impact on its revenues.[ELNK has been an ASND's customer of the MAX family]
